At the Kois Center, Founder and Director Dr. John C. Kois leads an elite group of distinguished dental professionals that develop and teach evidence-based dental courses with the ultimate goal of delivering the highest level of patient care. The Kois Center offers a comprehensive curriculum featuring the latest advances in aesthetic, implant, and restorative dentistry. The curriculum is based on the mission statement: “Enabling motivated dentists to achieve extraordinary levels, expanding knowledge and application skills in restorative dentistry.” Located adjacent to Kois Dentistry on the shores of Lake Union, the Kois Center in Tacoma, WA is the only continuing education program in the country that conducts and publishes independent research. Every course is updated each year based on new scientific evidence.

Dr. Kois is recipient of the 2002 Saul Schluger Memorial Award for Clinical Excellence in Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from both the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He also received the 2014 Dr. Thaddeus V. Weclew Award, which is presented annually to a dedicated educator who embodies the spirit of comprehensive dental care. He is past President of both the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, and a member of numerous other professional organizations. Dr. Kois also maintains a private practice focused solely on prosthodontics and is an affiliate professor in the Graduate Restorative Program at the University of Washington. He lectures nationally and internationally, is a reviewer for many journals, and co-editor in chief of The Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry.
Everyone associated with the Kois Center is committed to excellence — from staff, faculty, course facilitators, and guest instructors to scientific advisors, product advisors, and board members. A cadre of dedicated dentists serve on the advisory and editorial board, as well as special committees. The dental professionals that attend one or more courses at the Kois Center in Seattle, WA are also an integral part of the Kois family. Once students complete the Kois Center curriculum, they become a Graduate of the Center and are invited to attend the Annual Symposium to network with fellow Graduates and learn about the latest updates to the curriculum. At the helm of the Center’s on-site restaurant Birch is Executive chef Jeffrey Kessenich, who was featured in a local magazine as one of the “hot” Seattle chefs of 2014. As a self-funded learning center, the Kois Center doesn’t accept sponsorship funding and therefore isn’t swayed by the agenda or message of sponsors. Dr. Kois’ teaching philosophy reflects his unwavering commitment to integrity, with all aspects of courses based on independent scientific evidence reviewed at the highest levels. Small courses with a maximum of 37 students ensure meaningful interaction and one-on-one support from a Mentor. As a teacher, Dr. Kois is down to earth, non-judgmental, treats students like equals and expects them to treat him the same, and encourages every participant to offer their opinions and views about any approach or concept.
Since 2007, the Kois Center has published more than 60 independent research projects that form the basis of their highly-regarded curriculum. Dr. Kois has also published numerous articles in peer-reviewed dental publications. From humble beginnings in 1994 in the back room of a dental office near Tacoma to their state-of-the-art space in South Lake Union, the Kois Center has built an international reputation for excellence. Dentists, specialists, laboratory technicians, and dental staff from around the world have attended the prestigious courses and proudly post this on their practice websites.
Kois Center alumni that complete all the required courses at the Kois Center earn the title of a Recognized Specialist, Graduate, Mentor, or Clinical Instructor. Honorary Members are established leaders and educators in the dental community that been selected to participate in the Kois Center curriculum.
